York Res 2 - 3 Hull City Res

Report

Hull City reserves overcame a York City reserve side at the Kit-Kat Crescent as defender Danny Coles made his long awaited return from injury.

The centre-back's appearance was the main highlight of the night as Coles played sixty minutes following an injury that has kept the defender out for the past ten months. Unfortunately, things didn't start well for Coles as he looked to regain the form that saw him become a first team regular following his transfer from Bristol City.

After only a minute, Coles' challenge led to a dangerous free-kick which found it's way into Duke's net via a deflection. City had some first team squad on show as Nick Barmby and winger Mark Yeates were handed starts whilst Ian Ashbee was missing - with rumors suggesting an imminent return to the Hull City squad when they take on Birmingham City at the weekend.

It didn't take long for Nick Barmby to stake his claim for a place in City's next game as he leveled immediately with a well taken chip over the on rushing York goalkeeper. Nicky Featherstone then sent City in-front with a goal after twenty minutes after an assist from the impressive Barmby.

Canny Coles made a successful return to action and was replaced by Matthew Plummer after an hour's play. However, York equalised through Alex Rhodes before a late goal from substitute Bill Law (replacing Mark Yeates) won City the match. The assist again came from Nick Barmby.

On positive notes, Danny Coles return to action eases the mounting injury problems, leaving only Stephen McPhee as a long term causality in the treatment room. Nick Barmby did his chances of featuring at ST Andrews no harm with a goal and two assists adding to an impressive performance.

Does the absence of Ian Ashbee suggest that he will feature against Birmingham? We will have to wait and see, but I know what I hope happens!
